Safety of those in our communities is a top priority and NRHA has developed a community-oriented strategy to ensure or residents feel safe in their homes within our public housing communities.

Our goal is to reduce crime, and the fear of crime, occurring within our public housing communities, while also engaging residents to actively report suspicious behavior. The NRHA Security Programs department coordinates efforts between residents and Norfolk Police Department to accomplish these goals. They also administer community-based safety initiatives which are inclusive of prevention, intervention, and education that foster resident engagement.

Remember, the best way to reduce crime is to report it! NRHA offers a confidential tip line online. Together we can make our communities safer.

NRHA does not tolerate illegal activity or program fraud in our communities.

Please complete the form below, if you witness or have reason to suspect that a Resident or Housing Choice Voucher participant is engaged in the following:

  • Drug or gang activity
  • Domestic violence
  • Suspicious conduct such as extreme foot traffic or lots of visitors to a unit
  • Program fraud such as a person living in a unit who is not on the lease

  • Describe the activity you saw or suspect
  • Give the name and address of the individual you are calling about
  • Leave your name and phone number if you would like NRHA to contact you. You are not required to do this and can remain anonymous if you choose. All information you provide is confidential and will not be disclosed to anyone.

    Norfolk Police Department Community Resource Officers (CRO) Program

    Community Resource Officers’ (CRO) Program is a community policing initiative designed to address crime and social issues that have an adverse effect on the safety of our family communities. They patrol neighborhoods on foot or bike, attend community events and are involved in youth-related activities. CROs encourage residents to become actively involved in the safety of their community by helping identify and eliminate the opportunities to commit crime.

     

    Sentry Force Security, LLC

    NRHA has contracted with Sentry Force Security, LLC., an armed private security company, to work in partnership with the Norfolk Police Department in our family communities. The security guards will serve as an additional resource in the prevention and reduction of crime in our communities. This kind of partnership between police and private security has been very effective in reducing violent crime in other communities across the country.

    Violence Against Women

    In accordance with the Violence Against Women Act, NRHA provides help to residents who are experiencing domestic abuse, dating violence or stalking. Security Programs staff offers assistance with services or programs, either directly or in partnership with other service providers.     Trespass/Ban Policy

    The use of trespass warnings and banishment procedures are an effective means for deterring both criminal activities and those activities which disrupt the quality of life in public housing communities and properties owned and or managed by NRHA.

    Special Event Authorization & Permitting

    Special Event Authorization is required to hold events on Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority property that have an anticipated attendance of 50 people or more, such as festivals, block parties, community gatherings and more.  Events that involve the use of any City of Norfolk properties also require an approved city permit. These properties can include community parks, Norfolk Public Schools grounds, streets and sidewalks.
