What Is A Reasonable Accommodation?

A Reasonable Accommodation is a change or modification to housing or services that allows residents with disabilities to fully use and enjoy their homes.

Details

Individuals with a physical or mental impairment qualify for reasonable accommodations.

You may request reasonable accommodations at any time.

  • During application

  • Eviction

Reasonable accommodations can be requested by

  • Tenant
  • Family member
  • Service provider
  • Legal representative
  • Installing grab bars in a bathroom
  • Allowing a service or emotional support animal in a no-pet building
  • Providing a unit on a lower floor for someone who cannot use stairs
  • Assigning an accessible parking spot close to the entrance

Each request is assessed individually based on the resident’s disability-related need.

  • NRHA will only request verification if the disability or need for the accommodation is not obvious.
  • You will not be asked to provide medical records or a diagnosis.

Verification can come from a healthcare provider, therapist, social worker, or any authorized health professional familiar with your condition.

  • Include a downloadable FAQ or plain language guide (linked to the RA FAQ )
  • Add infographic for visual learners
  • Include staff training highlights for transparency (e.g., “All staff receive regular training on Fair Housing and ADA compliance.”)
