What Is A Reasonable Accommodation?
A Reasonable Accommodation is a change or modification to housing or services that allows residents with disabilities to fully use and enjoy their homes.

Individuals with a physical or mental impairment qualify for reasonable accommodations.

Reasonable accommodations can be requested by
- Tenant
- Family member
- Service provider
- Legal representative
- Installing grab bars in a bathroom
- Allowing a service or emotional support animal in a no-pet building
- Providing a unit on a lower floor for someone who cannot use stairs
- Assigning an accessible parking spot close to the entrance
- Sending notices in large print or via email instead of mail
Each request is assessed individually based on the resident’s disability-related need.
- NRHA will only request verification if the disability or need for the accommodation is not obvious.
- You will not be asked to provide medical records or a diagnosis.
Verification can come from a healthcare provider, therapist, social worker, or any authorized health professional familiar with your condition.
- Include a downloadable FAQ or plain language guide (linked to the RA FAQ )
- Add infographic for visual learners
- Include staff training highlights for transparency (e.g., “All staff receive regular training on Fair Housing and ADA compliance.”)
- Download or request a Reasonable Accommodation Request Form
- Submit to your Property Manager or the RA Department
- You will receive an acknowledgment letter within 3 business days
- A decision will be made within 7 business days after all documentation is received
